Elder Bednar attended our Sacrament Meeting
The last ten minutes of fast and testimony meeting, they invited Elder and Sister Bednar to share their testimonies.
Sister Bednar said that Elder Bednar was invited to an interview with President Hinckley at about 4 p.m. on the Friday before conference. There he was called to be an apostle. He was told he needed to have a talk ready to give in conference on Sunday and he needed to have it ready for the translators by Saturday. He came back from his interview with President Hinckley and began preparing his talk. So as not to disturb him, Sister Bednar decided to read ahead in the Gospel Doctrine Course. She opened her scriptures are read: 3 Nephi 12:1-2
1 AND it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost; therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am.
2 And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.
That was quite a powerful witness to her.
Elder Bednar said that he wanted to say something but did not want anyone to be offended by it--then he said, "Wasn't something said in conference about taking offence?" Bednar's talk in conference was titled: And Nothing Shall Offend Them. He then pointed out that of the 15 testimonies borne today, 13 were sisters, not counting the bishop. He said that while the sister's testimonies were sweet and powerful, more brothren needed to bear their testimonies. He promised them that their ward and be strenghtened and grow in proportion to the number of brothers who bore their testimonies. He said he felt impressed to tell them that the Lord had sent him, an apostle, to their ward to deliver that message.
